    The Centre’s 80th birthday event – 25th November

    IMG_2652a

We were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Patricia Hay-Justice, along to the Centre on Wednesday 25th November. The Mayor, accompanied by a number of users young and old, was there to unveil a plaque and open our smart new look foyer.

The plaque commemorates not only the 80th anniversary of the Centre, but also the 1946 re-opening of the Centre as a boys club by Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, following the end of the Second World War. During the war, the Centre had been used as a civil defence base. The original plaque commemorating Monty’s visit in 1946 has long since vanished, so this was an opportunity to restore one little important piece of the Centre’s history. We were also pleased to be joined on the day by Colonel John Power, of Coulsdon Manor Rotary. The Rotary Club funded the original construction of the then ‘Coulsdon Boys Club’ back in 1935, so we were delighted to have a representative of that important local organisation with us to mark our 80th anniversary. Thanks to all concerned, and especially Paul Ford, one of the Association’s trustees, who organised the event.

On stage this weekend: The golden age of wireless comes to Coulsdon Community Centre

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the BBC Light Programme, Theatre Workshop Coulsdon presents an affectionate look at the Golden Age of British wireless. An evening of original light entertainment, one-act plays and sketches nearly all written or adapted by members of TWC, along with live music and songs from the period.

With a stiff upper lip and a little tongue in cheek, our tales of plucky public schoolgirls in peril and bold spacemen taking on evil invaders from Venus, of eerie ghosts and devilish murder mysteries are set in a studio and enacted as a radio show might have been. To amuse, enthral and above all, entertain. Tune in…

Saturday 21st March, Sunday 22nd March, Thursday 26th March, Friday 27th March, Saturday 28th March and Sunday 29th March.

    All performances at 8pm.

    Tickets £9 Concessions £6

SNOW! (And what you should know)

So we’ve had a bit of snow over the last few days. And we’re probably going to get some more. The Centre will remain open for business as usual, and Phil, our gardener, will come out and make sure there’s a pathway cleared from the main gates to the front door. Obviously it’s not possible for one man to clear the entire car park though, so we’d like to advise users to be extremely careful if driving into the Centre’s grounds and on the approach road, Barrie Close. We have to point out that you do so at your own risk and the Centre can’t take responsibility if you choose to drive in the snow on the Centre’s property, so please take care. And wrap up warm.

    We’ve got a new roof!

True to their word, our roofing contractors ARJ completed their works on schedule and have now cleared the site. So everything is now back to normal – the only difference being that we now have a generously insulated new roof, which should cure the problems with condensation which had occurred over the last couple of years. Great job ARJ – thank you. And thanks to our landlord, Croydon Council, for commissioning and managing the contract.

    Roofing works kick-off, 6th October

From Monday 6 October for the next 5 – 6 weeks, we’ll have contractors on-site. They are laying a new roof over the top of the existing roof, with a fleecy insulation layer between the two skins. These works are designed to cure the problem of condensation in the roof space, which we have been wrestling with for the last two years. The work needs some scaffolding to be erected around the building, which means a few parking spaces may be temporarily out of action. Apart from this, we don’t anticipate any serious disruption to any of our user groups or bookings. Work on the roof will be taking place on weekdays between 08.00 and 15.30, and all being well will be completed by around 10 November.
